briangcb When I first started watching late night talk shows I was in my teens. In the early 2000's. I was in high school and could never sleep very well. So I started watching Leno, then after Leno would come Conan. At first I enjoyed them both equally and could never decide which one I thought was funnier. After a certain amount of time I started to notice the only time I was laughing at Leno was when he was doing his 'headlines' routine on Monday nights. Admittedly he does have some clever jokes in his monologue and I do get a kick out of his comments when making fun of people who are total idiots, whether he is outright calling them an idiot or just lets them continue to make morons out of themselves. However, Conan has me in stitches through his entire show practically. As I continued to watch both, I noticed more and more that Leno is just an arrogant and obnoxious man. He had Clint Eastwood on once and it was plain and obvious that he was strongly resisting the urge to punch Leno in the face. I know what you're thinking "Eastwood doesn't have a sense of humour" That's exactly what I thought at first as well, but I've seen Eastwood in numerous interviews since, on Late Night, the Late Show, and various other interviews. He is a very happy, kind, magnanimous person with a great sense of humour about himself, especially his age. Making comments such as if he were to do another Dirty Harry movie it'd mainly about him chasing crooks with his walker and fly-fishing on weekends.Anyways, I'm getting off topic. I continued to watch Leno hoping that maybe his attitude would improve. In fact, it got worse; making comments to actors about their teenage daughters, basically saying he wants to sleep with them. Making crude comments that would be considered sexual harassment in an office setting to his female guests, making racist comments to his black guests; Samuel L. Jackson was on once talking about the Pontiac GTO he just bought from the movie xXx and Leno made a comment saying something like 'Hmm, a black guy driving a 70's muscle car, the cops will have a field day with that.' It was obvious that Jackson was offended but he remained professional through the rest of the interview...the list goes on. It got to the point where I was fidgeting and pulling my hair out waiting for Conan to come on and I actually started to despise Jay Leno. Nothing has changed and I'm over-joyed that Conan is taking his place.

mike2626 Just the fact that Carson picked Leno ought to tell you something. Leno is top notch stand up comedy. You can tell he worked his way up and honed his craft...learning from the greats that came before him. Has anyone out there heard of Jack Benny? Letterman on the other hand knows little about working comedy. He like to sort of glide thru on his "personality." When he's trying to make us laugh, he just shows us himself as some sort of super cool old guy who "psst...he prob did drugs in his youth.....shhh." And if the joke doesn't work, it's not his fault, cuz he's so cool. And has anyone caught on to why Letterman is so hung up on Regis Philbin? It's cuz Letterman is getting old and showing it, and he's jealous of Philbin. Cuz Philbin is still going strong. And when Letterman reaches his age, he's gonna look terrible. So for now, Letterman takes pot shots at Philbin, trying to make Philbin look old and square, so in contrast Letterman can think of himself as young and cool.

I think that you are an egotistical individual. I hate your show because you never have anything worthwhile to say. I would rather see you taken off television because you do not know how to act. You will never get my vote MR. JAY Leno. Your show is a disgrace to the human race. I hope that your show is soon taken off the air and replaced with someone who has more sense than you will ever have. Your life is a joke. You think that is all life is, a joke because I have never seen you serious on your show. You think it a joke to run people down, even those who are in government, especially our president. I feel sorry for you because truly you are not a happy person because otherwise you would not talk about people like you do.

DKosty123 Jay Leno has kept TONIGHT afloat on NBC. Leno is still learning to try to imitate Carson, but has not reached it. Johnny Carson wanted David Letterman to replace him & even wrote jokes for Lettermans CBS monologues until his death recently. When Leno first took over, he seemed to have more energy but he recently has allowed himself to get into a rut which shows. All his monologues are just jammed packed with jokes & he fires them off. Only thing is Leno is not humble like Carson. I have noticed in recent viewings Leno is using a laugh track. It is very obvious the laughs are canned to enhance the audience participation (or lack of it) when the joke is a dud. When Carson fired off a dud, he could sense it & make a self-effacing joke about the material or himself. When Leno fires off a dud (which seems to be more & more often recently), it just sits there. When he fires off a bunch, things get pretty mean. Leno does have two big drawbacks Carson did not have. (1) Carson used to get 90 minutes to fill & had to develop a wealth of materials plus have longer interviews with guest stars which made him a better interviewer. Leno has not gotten this opportunity. (2) Leno has a competitor in Letterman & because of this, TONIGHT is no longer the number 1 show it once was. These 2 problems are not Leno's fault, just facts. All this said, Leno is OK doing Stand-Up & holding his own but the show Conan Obrien is taking over is not the dominate show Carson had. Leno has made it his own- but he is not quite up to the standard once set by the master- Carson never needed a laugh track & Letterman has shaken TONIGHT's foundation thoroughly.Leno's last Tonight ending was especially correct. He ended with all the children that he and his staff had in 17 years. The last scene with Leno & all the kids is a great reminder that Leno is the kid who took over for the master, Johnny Carson. He never considered himself to be as great as Carson, but he is his own man. Let's see how 10 PM treats him in the fall.
