Haven Kaycee It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film
ok_english_bt The positive reception this series has received isn't hard to understand. 'Vida' deals with interesting themes related to family and cultural identity, and it's actually well put together and acted. But why are all the male characters useless good-for-nothings: Lyn's boyfriend (unfaithful and irresponsible), her ex- (exploitative and superficial), Nelson the realtor and property developer (conned the sisters' mother, scheming financial predator), Mari's 'activitist' boyfriend (dishonest, manipulative), Emma's male colleagues from her workplace (in Chicago?) (unsympathetic, immature, sexist) ... sorry, but it just goes on and on and ON! Vida is a rogues gallery of male characters!I understand the drama is centred on the lives of women (the 2 sisters and lesbian 'wife' of their late mother, particularly), and perhaps there's a need to get back at men for all the years of hurt etc. But using unrelenting negative male (latino male?) stereotypes is a bit short-sighted. The story loses it's credibility in my view.I only point this out because it spoilt my enjoyment of the series, otherwise pretty good, and while I noticed 'Vida' picked up a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, I hope they'll improve it in Season 2 by including more-rounded male characters along with the current ensemble.
craigburdsall I was hooked within five minutes of watching, and it gets better with each episode. An inside look into Mexican-American neighborhood and it could be anywhere. From LA to The Mission in San Francisco to South Tucson and beyond. I can't wait for more!!!
tadaia I can't remember where I heard about this show but it was early 2018. I was interested because the themes and characters seemed a bit unique and different than most anything else on tv. I noted the date for the premier and caught up to the four episodes over the holiday. Wow! What a show! I'm not Mexican American but it feels very authentic. What was most impressive was that I immediately identified and connected with the characters. The writers have done a fantastic job conceptualizing each character and creating meaningful and realistic relationships between them. I cared about their stories and where they were headed after the only the first episode. It's the kind of excellent writing that transcends any particular ethnicity or culture. It's Starz so there's a fair amount of sex, which works here; but that component is less a distraction and more a compliment to the overall show. The only disappointment was finding out how short this season is... only 6 episodes. I sincerely hope that Starz brings this back soon. Highly recommend!
thomas-junior This show could have been right but it was so wrong. Why do I need to see a woman's nipple be sucked? That is porn. Good film making can give you emotion without showing ACTUAL motion.
